Yamanoue Stela is one of Japan’s oldest tombstones built in 68, and is 111 cm tall. On a field-stone made from pyroxene andesite, 53 words are craved onto it. Chori, a monk of Hokoji Temple, made this as a memorial service to Kurometoji, his dead mother, along with recording the lineage of him and his mother to honor it. It is called the 3 Kozuke tombstones, along with Kanaizawa Stela and Tago Stela.
