Kozukenosuke, who contributed greatly towards the Meiji modernization, lived in seculusion in the present day Kurabuchi-machi Gonda after the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate. However, he was captured in 1868 by the Western Army for “scheming to rebel,”and was beheaded at Mizunuma Kawahara. A memorial to honor him was erected where he died.
